Indonesia

Indonesia?
We've been planning a long (8 month) trip to live/work in Indonesia. However, there has recently been a "travel warning" issued for that location. We don't really want to upset our plans unneccesarily. Has anyone been to Jakarta recently and what advice would you give?

I would say that Jakarta is a much safer place today then it was a couple of years ago. During Susilo B. Yudoyhono's (current Pres.) term, he formed a special anti terrorist police force. The police force was successful in killing many terrorists who planned the Bali, Australian emb, and Marriot Hotel bombings.

Welcome to Indonesia, Miss. Current Indonesia is much safer. There are many Police stations i.e. in Jakarta every 1 Km radius. Here's the testimonial of The tourists who ever been to Indonesia: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070103005224AAcVqNr&r=w&pa=FZptHWf.BGRX3OFMhzxVVOIgo33FBBouF2TKD2Pmr9jGl3puR4ywy.shxCNW6xo.qTNRAcVfZ.eCamvrag--&paid=answered#QMd4WTG1UjXLFsdFJVfNMA0UaxUsHp01OeQfkwzmtgDOKVtuhS9a That's my best solution for you. See you in Indonesia.

Nowadays there's no place can guarrantee safety in this world. You could be safer in Indonesia than getting lost in Aurora IL and CO at night.

Hi there! I've been to Jakarta last November til December. generally, its a safe place to visit/live/work. I roamed the streets without fear except when crossing the streets, but I got used to it eventually. in the duration of my stay there, I didn't have any untoward incident. people are nice but only few know how to speak english so better learn some basic Bahasa Indonesia. Its fun and interesting experience. Have a great trip!

If you're going to Jakarta: Like all capital cities, its security is the top one. Thanks to past bombings and incidents, Jakarta is alert 24/7.

I was in Jakarta for Christmas and New Year. Yes, there are always fears of something bad is going to happen. But I think the authorities are very good. If you go to any shopping centre, office buildings, hotels, etc there's always a security check. I would go. Indonesia is a geat plave to live & work.

Hi, Apart from what you read above, I would like to add some other thing. 1. Make sure you live in safe area. Most expariates live in Kemang, appartments in Thamrin/sudirman, Menteng. 2. Dont expose jewelery or cash when shoppings. 3. Dont talk to strangers. (In parking area, walking in malls) 4. Take ONLY "Blue bird" or "Silver bird" taxi. That is the only taxi operator that runs with responsibility. (in my opinion). 5. Must enjoy the food!!!!(gado gado - Jakarta style salad with peanut sauce, soto betawi and many more) 6. Keep the emergency number with you in wallet or anyplace that you bring along in daily activity. 7. Preferably to have locals with you whenever you go somewhere more "adventurous". There are thousands of things I can tell you....but instead of listing it down here, you can go to: http://www.jakartaexpat.com - maybe drop some question you want to know more about Jakarta. Yes, no place so called "safe"....I ve been living here in Jakarta 90% of my life....and still alive today ^_^....so.... ENJOY JAKARTA!!!!!!

It might, but you may need a converter, or your TV may explode. Probably something like this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7153518&st=voltage+converter&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1110266394957 Hope that helps
2 :
It will not work. The TV standards used in the US vs Indonesia are completely different.

If you have money, then try to study in Holland as a graduate student (master degree or PhD). After graduation, you can get extra 3 months to stay longer to find a job. After 3 months, you are only allowed to stay in Holland as long as you are employed by Dutch/International companies in the Netherlands with certain minimum salaries as kennis migrant (knowledge - high skilled migrant). However, Dutch companies are usually prefer for people who speaks Dutch. So I suggest you to study Dutch as well. Please read here for details: http://www.expatlaw.nl/dutch_highly_skilled_migrant.htm

Go through these requirements of the Indonesian Government : http://www.expat.or.id/business/expatstayrequirements.html

it is very very complicated for you, (a westerner) to come to indonesia and just work.. unless you know someone who lives here.. you need a work permit, you need all these papers, you will have immigratio and corrupt cops hassling you all the time, trying to get money off you, it is very difficult and stressful.. if you want to work in asia, go to singapore or hongkong..
