What kind of clothes do men wear in Indonesia?
What do ordinary working class men wear in Indonesia, specifically on Sumatra? Are their clothing styles pretty similar to the West?

I think it's same and similar to the west. Like office suit. Or you can wear batik instead. It's formal too. But mostly ppl wear batik in wedding reception or some thing like that. So don't worry too much.

I prefer you ask about "working clothes", rather than "what working class wear". I prefer to not divide people into "working class", "elite class", whatever classes... Anyway, office workers throughout Indonesia wear semi-formal outfit. The male would wear shirt (long or short sleeves - with collar) and trousers. Some offices requires more formal dress that men should wear tie and blazer or jacket. Not many people use blazer in the dry season due to the hot weather. Another choice for office outfit is batik shirt. But this is considered more when you're going to meet public officials or going to attend a wedding ceremony. Sumatran wedding ceremony, however, uses more of their own traditional fabrics, called 'songket'. So you could wear songket as sort of sarong covering your trousers. Thank you for asking, btw :)

Do you men clothes workers wear at their workplace? That depends on the type of work and the location. In the cities (like Medan for example), office workers wear shirt (either short or long-sleeve) and formal trousers. But workers who are working in the oil companies (in Duri for example) are used to go to the office with casual clothes (polo-shirts and jeans).

Not much different than the people here in Kuala Lumpur. Some wears jeans and t-shirts, some wears batik and the custom shirt and it's a bit similar to the top of "baju kurung".. and some of them used to have shorts and t-shirts for their daily outfit.

if you picture indonesia the way you see Myanmar/Burma, you are absolutely wrong. Indonesia is a modern country with various cultural arts. So in term of Working clothes, Indonesians wear the same style with western clothes

The men in Indonesia wear a casual clothe for working ( with long pant or Jeans & Shirt or T-Shirt with collar) This for daily work or Class But for the Top Manager usually wear formal clothes (long pant & Shirt with tie & Jazz or Blasser)

Cooling clothes, as the weather can be pretty hot. I think batik shirt for casual events, short sleeve shirts for work, pants or jeans most of the time, shorts at home or at the beach! T-shirts are also the ;in thing' now. Happy New Year! PS: Yes, they are pretty similiar to the west except on Fridays when Muslims where traditional costume to pray!
